The Women's Super League sits at the very top of the English women's game. It was founded in 2010 and first played in 2011, created by the Football Association to give the women's top flight a proper professional home for the first time. The "Super League" name was meant to signal exactly that — a step change from the amateur and semi-pro leagues that came before it. Since 2024 the top two divisions have been run not by the FA but by an independent company, now called WSL Football, giving the league its own governing body for the first time. For the 2026/27 season the WSL expanded from 12 clubs to 14, its biggest structural change in years — meaning more games per club, two teams promoted and relegated each season instead of one, and a play-off deciding the final place. Chelsea and Arsenal are the most successful sides in the league's history.
