West Ham United Women were formed in 1991, when the club's Football in the Community officer Roger Morgan revived the idea of a women's team — a short-lived West Ham Ladies had existed briefly in the 1970s. Their first match came in March 1992, a friendly defeat to Barnet Ladies, before they entered the London regional leagues and climbed steadily, reaching the Premier League South by 2004/05. The transformational moment arrived in 2018, when West Ham were awarded a licence for the top-tier Women's Super League, taking the club from a part-time set-up straight into the professional elite. The Irons marked their debut top-flight season in style, reaching the 2019 Women's FA Cup final at Wembley. Nicknamed the Irons and the Hammers, they play at Dagenham & Redbridge's Chigwell Construction Stadium in east London.
