The Hammers
West Ham grew out of Thames Ironworks, a team formed by workers at the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company in east London. Both of the club's nicknames, the Hammers and the Irons, come from that heavy-industry past.
Nickname origins are often disputed, and clubs sometimes change their story. We update entries when we confirm something new.
