Charlton Athletic Women reached the top flight by a winding route and through more than one identity. The club was founded in 1991 as Bromley Borough, became Croydon Women's FC in 1994, and took the Charlton Athletic name in 2000 — a period in which they grew into one of the most successful women's sides in England. Then came the setback: in the summer of 2007, after the men's club were relegated from the Premier League, the women's team was controversially disbanded and almost the entire senior squad left, before a rescue sponsorship package allowed the setup to survive. The Addicks rebuilt patiently, winning the Women's Premier League Southern title in 2017/18 and beating Blackburn in a play-off final to climb back into the second tier. They wear Charlton's red and play at The Valley.
