The Addicks

The story goes that local fishmonger Arthur "Ikey" Bryan rewarded the team with haddock and chips. Haddocks first appeared in 1908 and became Addicks by 1910, and fans revived the name during the club's exile from The Valley in 1985.

Charlton were founded by teenagers in East Street in June 1905 and borrowed Woolwich Arsenal's red and white before making them their own. Older nicknames include the Robins (adopted 1931) and the Valiants (picked in a fan contest in the 1960s, along with the sword badge).

Nickname origins are often disputed, and clubs sometimes change their story. We update entries when we confirm something new.
