Aston Villa Women
Aston Villa Women have one of the more roundabout origins in the women's game. The club was founded in 1973 as Solihull FC, an independent side with no ties to Aston Villa at all. When Villa looked to form a women's team in 1989, Solihull answered the call, affiliating and rebranding as Villa Aztecs, before agreeing to change their name again in 1996 to become the officially recognised Aston Villa women's side. As Villa Aztecs they reached the 1995 League Cup final, and after years in the lower divisions as Aston Villa Ladies they claimed their first major trophy in 2013, winning the Women's Premier League Cup with a penalty-shootout victory over Leeds United. The club dropped "Ladies" for "Women" as part of the wider modernisation of the English game.
