The Dons
Shared nicknameDons comes from the Wimbledon name. AFC Wimbledon were founded by supporters on 30 May 2002, led by Kris Stewart, and held open trials on Wimbledon Common.
The club's other nickname, the Wombles, did not start in football: they are the characters from the children's books and TV series The Wombles, who live on Wimbledon Common, and the club borrowed the name from the area's most famous residents.
Milton Keynes Dons inherited the Dons nickname from Wimbledon FC after the move to Milton Keynes in 2003-04, and officially became MK Dons on 21 June 2004.
In the women's game
AFC Wimbledon Women were formed as Friends of Fulham in 1974, renamed Wimbledon in 1991, and became AFC Wimbledon in 2003 after the men's club was re-formed.
