The Grecians
The earliest printed use found is a December 1901 newspaper match preview. The leading theory links it to the St Sidwell's area of Exeter, outside the old city walls, whose residents were jokingly cast as Ancient Greeks. A 1669 record mentions "Grecians of the Parish of St Sidwell's", and a 1726 Troy re-enactment is said to have used parishioners as the Greek side.
When Exeter City turned professional in 1908, a local writer ran an informal supporters' vote and settled on the Grecians.
