The Tricky Trees
Forest began in 1865 when shinty players at the Clinton Arms pub, led by J. S. Scrimshaw, decided to play football instead. They bought twelve tasselled caps in Garibaldi Red, after the Italian leader, which is why the club is known as the Reds.
The early games were played on Forest Racecourse, part of old Sherwood Forest, which inspired the name. Tricky Trees is a lesser-used nickname that has stuck.
