The Hatters

Shared nickname

Two hat-making towns, one nickname.

Stockport County took it from Stockport's old hat-making industry. The club began in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers and became Stockport County in 1890.

Luton Town are named for Luton's hat-making trade, which flourished in the town from the 17th century. The club formed in April 1885 and was the first fully professional club in southern England by 1891.

Nickname origins are often disputed, and clubs sometimes change their story. We update entries when we confirm something new.
