The Baggies

The Baggies has no agreed origin. One theory is staff carrying gate money in large leather bags. Another says Aston Villa fans mocked Albion supporters in baggy work trousers. A third points to baggy shorts.

The older nickname, the Throstles, comes from the song thrush on the badge and a local dialect word for the bird. The club began in 1878 as West Bromwich Strollers, formed by workers at George Salter's spring works, and became Albion in 1880.

Nickname origins are often disputed, and clubs sometimes change their story. We update entries when we confirm something new.
