Loughborough Lightning FC
Loughborough Lightning's women's football club has two roots that came together. The playing side traces back to 1999, when Gail and Paul Fox founded Shepshed Foxes — renamed Loughborough Foxes in 2002 — to give local girls a chance to play; after 15 years in local leagues the Foxes climbed to the third tier by 2015. In 2021, that club combined with Loughborough University's high-performance women's football programme to form Loughborough Lightning, taking the name of the University's well-known "Lightning" sporting family that also fields elite netball, rugby and cricket teams. Based at Loughborough's world-class sporting facilities, the football side pairs competitive women's football with full sports-science, medicine and academic support — a distinctive university-backed high-performance model — and has continued to climb the national pyramid, winning promotion as Midlands division champions.
