Durham Women

Durham Women FC, the Wildcats, were formed in 2014 through a merger of the South Durham & Cestria girls' club and Durham University, created specifically to apply for a place in the newly-expanded second tier of English women's football. They earned their licence and have competed at that level ever since, playing at Maiden Castle, a facility shared with the University. What sets Durham apart is their independence — they're one of the very few clubs in the upper tiers run entirely separately from a men's professional club, relying instead on the University partnership for facilities and a scholarship-style recruitment model. Their best years came in the late 2010s and early 2020s, including a fourth-place finish that earned them a Club of the Year award and, in 2020/21, a strong push for promotion. The club has become a real focal point for women's football in the North East.
