Doncaster Rovers Belles
Doncaster Rovers Belles are one of the most storied clubs in English women's football. They were founded in 1969 as the Belle Vue Belles — a group of young female Doncaster Rovers fans who sold Golden Goal draw tickets on the terraces every Saturday and fancied a game of their own. From those beginnings they grew into the dominant force of the English women's game through the 1980s and early 90s, appearing in eleven of twelve Women's FA Cup finals between 1983 and 1994 and winning the trophy six times, alongside National Division league titles in 1992 and 1994 — one of only three non-London clubs ever to be crowned national champions. They turned semi-professional in 2002, formally merged with Doncaster Rovers in 2005, and were founder members of the Women's Super League in 2011. A controversial relegation from the WSL followed, but the Belles' place in the history of the women's game is secure.
