Leeds United Women FC
Leeds United Women were founded in 1989, and for their first years played in the Yorkshire and Humberside League before climbing the pyramid. Known like the men's club as the Whites, their history has been anything but smooth: in 2005 then-chairman Ken Bates withdrew the men's club's funding, forcing the women's side to survive on sponsorship, and from 2008 they played for a spell as Leeds Carnegie Ladies. They faced the real prospect of folding in the early 2010s before steadying themselves and, in time, being brought back into the Leeds United fold. Based in Garforth, they've become one of the leading women's clubs in West Yorkshire, carrying a big-club name and fanbase into the national league.
