Huddersfield Town Women
Huddersfield has one of the more remarkable footnotes in women's football history. Back in 1920 a club called Huddersfield Atalanta Ladies — named after the fierce huntress of Greek myth — played charity matches in front of crowds of up to 15,000, before the FA's ban on the women's game saw it disappear by 1925. The modern club is a separate lineage: formed in June 1988 as Huddersfield Ladies FC, it won a league cup and promotion in its very first season, then merged with Huddersfield Town Juniors in 1993 to become Huddersfield Town Ladies. Affiliated to the professional men's club and nicknamed the Terriers, they dropped "Ladies" for "Women" in 2019, and have enjoyed memorable Women's FA Cup runs — including a record home crowd for a tie against WSL side Everton.
