Lewes FC Women
Lewes FC Women are the women's side of one of football's most principled clubs. Formed in the early 2000s as the women's team of the community-owned Lewes FC — a fan-owned, not-for-profit club in East Sussex whose roots go back to 1885 — they climbed from regional football to the fourth-tier Premier League by 2012 after an unbeaten season. But Lewes's real place in history came in 2017, when the club became the first in the world to pay its men's and women's teams equally, sharing the same playing budget, facilities and stadium as part of its "Equality FC" initiative. The move drew global attention and owners in dozens of countries, and helped earn the women's side a place in the newly-formed second tier in 2018. Lewes have since campaigned prominently for equal FA Cup prize money, embodying a club that consistently puts principle before profit.
