Gwalia United

Gwalia United are the oldest women's football club still standing in Wales, and one of the most significant institutions in the Welsh game. Founded in 1975 as Llanedeyrn LFC out of a local charity match — at a time when the Welsh FA offered the women's game almost no support — the club has survived through a string of names, playing as Cardiff LFC, Inter Cardiff, Cardiff County and, for over two decades, Cardiff City Ladies, before a landmark rebrand to Gwalia United for the 2024/25 season. "Gwalia," an ancient poetic name for Wales, was chosen to reflect that heritage. Record 11-time winners of the Welsh Women's Cup, the club has represented Wales in the UEFA Women's competitions and produced a remarkable line of Welsh internationals, including Jess Fishlock and Sophie Ingle. Uniquely, they are the only Welsh club competing in the English league pyramid.
