Chelsea Women are among the dominant forces in the modern English game, but they started small. The club was formed in 1992 as Chelsea Ladies, born out of supporters' desire for the men's club to have a women's side, and spent its early years grinding through the regional Greater London leagues before reaching the FA Women's Premier League. The turning point came in 2004, when Chelsea FC took the team under its Football in the Community wing and began properly funding it — the platform for everything that followed. They were founder members of the Women's Super League and lifted their first major trophy, the Women's FA Cup, at Wembley in 2015. Under Emma Hayes, appointed in 2012, the Blues grew into serial winners, racking up a record haul of WSL titles alongside multiple FA Cups and League Cups, and reached their first Champions League final in 2021. The club dropped "Ladies" for "Women" in 2018.
