Manchester United WFC
Manchester United's relationship with women's football has been a stop-start one. An unofficial supporters' side existed from the late 1970s and eventually came under the club's wing, only to be controversially disbanded in 2005 following Malcolm Glazer's takeover, with the club saying it wanted to focus on youth football. It took until 2018 for United to return to the senior women's game: Manchester United Women were formed that May, with Casey Stoney as first head coach, and made an immediate impact — winning their first game back 1-0 against Liverpool and then romping to the Championship title in their debut season, finishing nine points clear to earn promotion to the Women's Super League. Based at Leigh Sports Village and carrying the Red Devils identity, they won their first major honour with the 2023/24 Women's FA Cup, a season that also brought their Champions League debut.
